Bigfoot Crossing the Street

Big foot is a lot of things to a lot of people -- a mystery to be solved, a story to tell their grandchildren, a secret to uncover -- but in Oregon, he is now the poster boy for crossing the street safely. Yes, really.

The PSA below comes courtesy of Oregon's Department of Transportation and Metro's new traffic-safety campaign and highlights Bigfoot.

The seemingly random choice to put the mysterious cryptid in the commercial actually makes some sense since the Pacific Northwest is home to some 200 sightings of the creature, according to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. The reports have been coming in since the mid 1980's and include "howls and footprints," "whooping sounds," and an "unrecognized stench." One man even claimed to have shot Bigfoot.

Whatever you personally believe about Bigfoot and cryptozoology in general, using the creature in a PSA seems a little odd. This isn't the first time Bigfoot has been played for laughs (anyone see Harry and the Hendersons), but let's face it, we have to laugh or we'd be terrified. Something tells me there would be nothing funny about coming face to face with Bigfoot in the deep woods of the Pacific Northwest.
